Should I apply to Texas Tech as a first-year or transfer student?
Start with your education history. Texas Tech’s policy classifies applicants with college attendance after high school or credit on a Joint Services Transcript as transfers. The Fall 2025 first-year and transfer rates describe separate groups, so choose the application category that fits your record.

Choose the category that fits your record
If you attended another college after graduating from high school, use the transfer path. Texas Tech also classifies applicants with Joint Services Transcript credit as transfers. Dual-credit work taken during high school can factor into a transfer GPA when you are applying as a transfer.
Submit the official college transcripts for each institution you attended. If you have fewer than 12 completed transferable hours after high school, TTU’s policy also calls for a high school transcript and applies first-year admission standards alongside its transfer conditions.
Compare the two Fall 2025 groups
Texas Tech’s Common Data Set section C1 reports 38,566 first-time, first-year applicants, 26,634 admits and 7,579 enrollees. That is a 69.06% admit rate and a 28.46% enrollment yield among admitted students.
Section D2 reports 7,068 degree-seeking transfer applicants, 4,465 admits and 2,744 enrollees. That is a 63.17% admit rate and a 61.46% enrollment yield among admitted transfers.
The admit rate divides admits by applicants. Yield divides enrollees by admits. Both comparisons use the same fall, and the linked TTU Common Data Set PDF carries an April 30, 2026 draft stamp.
Check hours, GPA and your intended major
Texas Tech lists a 2.50 cumulative GPA for assured admission with 12–23 transferable hours and a 2.25 GPA with 24 or more. The operating policy specifies at least 12 hours of required basic courses in the 12–23 hour band and eligibility to return to former institutions in both bands.
With fewer than 12 transferable hours, the policy also calls for at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA in completed work and eligibility to return to your most recent institution. Check your intended college’s rules as well. TTU’s transfer page lists engineering at 24 or more hours and a 2.75 GPA.
Look up each course in TTU’s transfer equivalency search, then check how the accepted credit applies to your intended degree. That will help you decide which courses to take before applying.
