Can I get a Texas Tech first-year housing exemption?
If the first-year residency rule applies, plan on university housing until University Student Housing approves your exemption. Match your situation to OP 30.25 and wait for the decision in your TTU email before signing off campus.

Check your campus and credit hours
OP 30.25, dated December 19, 2025, applies the first-year residency requirement to students at the Lubbock campus enrolled in more than six credit hours in fall or spring. The policy also covers students enrolled for three hours in a summer session. Texas Tech can charge applicable housing and dining fees if a student fails to meet the residency requirement.
Match the exemption to your situation
The parent or legal guardian category requires you to continue living at their established primary home in Lubbock County. The policy requires the student and parents to have established their primary residence in the county at least six months before the request. A court must have established any legal guardianship at least one year before the request. Other categories cover being 21 or older by the first day of classes in your initial term, being married, or having dependent children who live with you.
The policy’s earned-credit category requires at least 30 completed semester hours before enrollment or re-enrollment. Credits earned by exams or while in high school are excluded. TTU’s exemption page gives a 20-hour post-high-school rule specifically for Fall 2026–Spring 2027. For Fall 2027 planning, use the published policy and check for a term-specific update.
Use the separate process that fits your case
Medical hardship requests start with Student Disability Services. The policy requires documentation from your treating physician for an extreme condition that cannot be accommodated on campus. Other categories cover extreme financial or unusual hardship, prior active military service, qualifying university-managed scholarships or sponsorships, graduate or law enrollment and first-year student-athlete status.
Prior on-campus residence can also qualify. OP 30.25 names a completed fall and spring at Texas Tech. For prior on-campus housing at another university, the exemption page asks for proof of at least two fall or spring semesters.
University Student Housing can separately review term-specific hold removals for distance learners, students taking fewer than six hours during the academic year, and students enrolled at a campus other than Lubbock.
File before move-in and wait for written approval
Use Exemption Request in the TTU Housing Portal and upload the documentation for your category. Check the move-in deadline for your term. University Student Housing stops reviewing exemptions once a student moves into a hall. It lists a review window of seven to ten business days and emails the decision to your TTU address.
If you already signed a TTU Housing and Dining Contract, handle its cancellation separately after approval. If you need to plan for a residence hall, Fall 2027–Spring 2028 housing registration opens December 1, 2026, with room selection through Raiderland Reservation.
