How to plan study abroad at Texas Tech

Pick a term with your academic advisor, then check how the program’s courses would count before you commit. The application and commitment dates vary by program type.

Start with your degree plan

TTU recommends starting at least a year ahead. Bring the classes you still need to your academic advisor and compare the terms that leave room for study abroad. Rawls students start with a First Step session, and Engineering directs students to its Global Experiences Office.

Check how the courses would come back

Faculty-led programs generally enroll students in TTU catalog courses. Affiliate programs earn transfer credit. For an affiliate or reciprocal exchange, get the relevant TTU academic department’s course approval before travel. The study abroad advising team can help with the preapproval form.

Track both application and commitment dates

For Fall 2027, TTU lists March 17 to apply and March 25 to commit for faculty-led programs and reciprocal exchanges. The published affiliate dates are April 1 and April 10. Check your program brochure or provider before relying on those dates, since some programs set earlier deadlines.
